Vadagalai Thengala conflict in Parthasarathy Temple

Parthasarathy Temple,  Triplicane :
This temple has a long history of more than 400 years sectarian conflict between  Vadagalai and Thengalai sect on domination over the  temple and rituals to be followed in worshipping the  deity. As per the book " Worship and Conflict under  colonial rule" the  East India  Company in 1750s allowed the Vencata Kistnah Swamy on the eastern side for Thengalai  worship  and Tellisinga Swamy on the  western side for Vadagalai  worship. In early 1840s the  EIC took a policy decision  not to interfere in the  affairs of native  temples. On 16th January 1843 the  Collector of Madras  A . Robertson  appointed  Narasimloo Naick  ( current dharmakarta ) and Vencatanarayana Pillay as trustees  and a month later V.Sadagopachariar all from  Tengala sect.   The  collector  also issued a statement " The selection  of a trustee on the occurrence of a vacancy may  be left to the suffrage of the community of the  Tengala sect as has heretofore been customary on the  occasion of appointment of a dharmakarta ".  From then onwards the take over of the temple by Tengala  sect was complete.
